-----------------------------------------------With the stunning surroundings of St. Marys Abbey ruin, Museum Gardens are a great open space by the river Ouse in the centre of York England. Near Lendal bridge,the main entrance is off Museum Street.-- History of the area goes back 2000 years,with the Multanglar Roman tower and wall. As well as the Roman Tower,there"s the ruins of St. Marys Abbey, the Hospitium, the Observatory, Yorkshire Museum,and ruins of St. Leonards hospital. In one corner near the river is a restaurant "Inn in the City" (damaged by fire in 2018 )---I can remember in 1951, when i was just a teenager,the York Mystery Plays were performed in the ruins of St. Marys Abbey. The part of Mary was taken by Judy Dench a local girl, she went on in life to be Dame Judy Dench star of many James Bond Films..--------------ST.MARYS ABBEY RUIN.

MARY ABBEY was established in 1068 as a Benedictine monastery ,it became one of the wealthiest abbeys of the Order.-- In 1539 the Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII, .------------------------------HOSPITIUM is from the 14th century and a 2 storey building probably a quest house of the Abbey. Now holds weddings, and ceremonies, and conferences and trade fairs etc in the medieval rooms.----------------------------------------YORKSIRE MUSEUM. As well as been a great interesting museum ,inside is the Tempest Anderson Hall ,which seats 295 people.----------------------------------------OBSERVATORY.There is a small working observatory in the middle of the Gardens.-------------------------------------ST. LEONARDS HOSPITAL now a ruin was first call St. Peters. Run by Augustinian Monks/Nuns for the sick and disabled . The daily routine of the hospital included religious rituals of saying prayers and confessing sins. This ruins is visable from Museum Street near the Library.---- The gardens have many species of trees.----The Gardens are open daily and are free. --The Gardens are a location for Royal Gun Salutes of 21 gun salutes being fired at noon to celebrate occasions of the Royal Family.
